Penile curvature is defined as any defect of the penis other than the right, left, back or downward angle during erection. In these patients, the appearance of the penis and the location of the urethra are normal. Deformity is observed only in erection. In the publications, the incidence in boys has been reported as 4-10%.
Although the exact cause is unknown, lateral curvatures in children are due to congenital defect. In the normal anatomical structure of the penis, there are two spongy tissues containing blood vessels that provide erection, and the urinary tract (urethra) passing between these tissues. This disease occurs as a result of underdevelopment of one of these two spongy structures in the mother's womb. For this reason, it causes the penis to curve towards the side where the development is less during erection. In right or left curvatures, there is usually a slight backward curvature component. Rarely, the removal of excess skin after circumcision or the congenital lack of anterior penile skin can also cause curvatures.
In addition, the forward curvature of the penis in children may be associated with the disease we call hypospadias (prophet circumcision). This curvature is accompanied by 23% in mild forms and 90% in severe forms. This bias, which is a component of hypospadias disease, is corrected during hypospadias surgery (For detailed information, you can refer to hypospadias or www.hipospadias.com.tr page).
Mild forms of lateral curvature are followed in patients without hypospadia, while surgery is recommended for those with more than 30 degrees. Although there are different opinions about the age of surgery, we can say that heavy jerseys are corrected more comfortably and safely at an early age. It is a day surgery procedure. In severe forms, there may be an overnight stay. The post-operative dressing is removed 3 days later.
Problems such as some psychological disorders, loss of confidence, difficulties in sexual intercourse in adulthood can be seen in those who do not have surgery.
